Nursing Homes

The nursing home set list is of around 15 songs. It's set up for about 45 minutes to an hour of time to play. The general setup is an acoustic guitar and a foot percussion set. The drum is used conservatively and played lightly. It adds a lot to the play list. A Public Address (PA) system may be set up. In the nursing home setting it would be used primarily for acoustic effects and not volume.

Here is a list of the songs that are played and the lyrics. They could be printed out as a guide for patients to sing along. Since "Amazing Grace" is a popular song that many know, I ask if anyone wants to sing it while I play the rhythm. Here are the lyrics to the current set list.

You Are My Sunshine

The other night dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head and I cried.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You'll regret it all some day:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But not you've left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I'll forgive you dear, I'll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

This Little Light Of Mine

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Won't let it get blown out, I'm gonna let it shine.
Won't let it get blown out, I'm gonna let it shine.
Won't let it get blown out, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Hide it under a bushel, NO!, I'm gonna let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel, NO!, I'm gonna let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel, NO!, I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Let it shine 'til Jesus comes, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine 'til Jesus comes, I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine 'til Jesus comes, I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Swing Low Sweet Chariot

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
I saw a whole band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

Well I'm sometimes up and sometimes I'm down
Coming for to carry me home
But still my soul is heavenly bound
Coming for to carry me home

Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

Well if you get there before I do
Coming for to carry me home
I want you to tell all my friends I'm a coming too
Coming for to carry me home

Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

Oh swing down chariot stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot stop and let me ride
Swing down sweet chariot stop and let me ride
Cause I've earned me a home on the other side

Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
Jericho, Jericho
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
And the walls came tumbling down

Good morning sister Mary
Good morning brother john
Well I want to stop and talk to you
And tell you how I've come along

I know you heard about Joshua
He was the son of none
He Never stopped his work until
He new the work was done

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
Jericho, Jericho
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
And the walls came tumbling down

You may talk about the men of Gideon
You may brag about the men of Saul
But there's none like good old Joshua
At the battle of Jericho

Up to the walls of Jericho
They marched with spears in hand
Come blow them ram horns Joshua said
'Cause the battle is in our hands

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
Jericho, Jericho
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
And the walls came tumbling down

You may talk about your men of Gideon
You may brag about the King of Saul
But there's none like good old Joshua
At the battle of Jericho

When the children of Israel began to march
Seven times went round and round
Good ole Joshua commanded the sun to stand still
and the sun did never go down that morning

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
Jericho, Jericho
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
And the walls came tumbling down

Then the lamb ram sheep horns began to blow
The trumpets began to sound
Joshua commanded the children to shout
And the walls came tumbling down

Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
Jericho, Jericho
Joshua fought the battle of Jericho
And the walls came tumbling down

When The Saints Go Marching In

Oh, when the saints, go marching in,
Oh when the saints go marching in,
Oh Lord, I want to be in that number,
When the saints go marching in.

Oh when the sun, refuse to shine,
Oh when the sun refuse to shine,
Oh Lord, I want to be in that number,
When the sun refuse to shine.

Oh, when the saints, go marching in,
Oh when the saints go marching in,
Oh Lord, I want to be in that number,
When the saints go marching in.

Oh when they crown, Him Lord of all,
Oh when they crown Him Lord of all,
Oh Lord, I want to be in that number,
When they crown Him Lord of all.

Oh when they gather around the throne,
Oh when they gather around the throne,
Oh Lord I want to be in that number,
When they gather around the throne.

Oh, when the saints, go marching in,
Oh when the saints go marching in,
Oh Lord, I want to be in that number,
When the saints go marching in.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye,
There's a better world home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

I was standing by my window
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye,
There's a better world home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

Lord, I told that undertaker,
Undertaker please drive slow
For this body that you are hauling
Lord, I hate to see her go.

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye,
There's a better world home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
Whey they laid her in the grave

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye,
There's a better world home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

I went home, my home was lonely
Now my mother she was gone
All my brothers, sisters crying
What a home so sad and alone

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye,
There's a better world home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

We'll Meet Again

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know
We'll meet again
Some sunny day

Keep smilin' thru
Just like you
Always do
'Til the blue skies drive
The dark clouds
Far away

And will you please say hello
to the folks that i know
Tell'em that I won't be long
And they'll be happy to know
That when you saw me go
I was singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know
We'll meet again
Some sunny day

(spoken)
Yeah we'll meet again
I don't know where
Anf I don't know when
But I do know
That we'll meet again
Some sunny day

(spoken)
So Honey
Keep on smilin' thru
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies
Drive the dark clouds
Far away

And would you please say hello
To all the folks that I know
And tell'em I won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That when you saw me go
I was singing this song

(with choir)
We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know
We'll meet again
Some sunny day

Swinging on a Star

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule?

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak
And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig?

A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He has no manners when he eats his food
He's fat and lazy and extremely rude
But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish?

A fish won't do anything, but swim in a brook
He can't write his name or read a book
To fool the people is his only thought
And though he's slippery, he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish
A new kind of jumped-up slippery fish

And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin' on a star

I'll fly Away

Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

Oh, how glad and happy when we meet
I’ll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I’ll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away.

When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I'll fly away...

Wait For the Light to Shine

When the road is rocky and you're carryin' a load
Wait for the light to shine
If you find your friendless on that weary lonesome road
Wait for the light to shine

Wait for the light to shine
Wait for the light to shine
Pull yourself together and keep lookin' for the sign
Wait for the light to shine

Don't forget your brother as you travel through the land
Wait for the light to shine
He may be in trouble and may need a helping hand
Wait for the light to shine

Wait for the light to shine
Wait for the light to shine
Never give up hope or cast your pearls before the swine
Wait for the light to shine

If you're life is empty and you're on your last go round
Wait for the light to shine
If you hear the chime bells on the highway you have found
Wait for the light to shine

Wait for the light to shine
Wait for the light to shine
When your friends forsake you and you haven't got a dime
Wait for the light to shine

Don't let trouble fool you and your sins will all be gone
Wait for the light to shine
Don't forget it's dark it's just before the break of dawn
Wait for the light to shine

Wait for the light to shine
Wait for the light to shine
Keep these words before you as you walk that narrow line
Wait for the light to shine

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine

When I was a young man and never been kissed
I got to thinking it over what I had missed.
I got me a girl, I kissed her and then
Oh Lord, I kissed her again.

Chorus:
Oh, kisses sweeter than wine,
Oh Lord, kisses sweeter than wine

I asked her to marry and be my sweet wife,
And we would be so happy the rest of our lives.
I begged and I pleaded like a natural man,
And then, Oh Lord, she gave me her hand.

Oh, kisses sweeter than wine,
Oh Lord, kisses sweeter than wine

I worked mighty hard and so did my wife,
Workin' hand in hand to make a good life.
With corn in the field and wheat in the bins,
I was, Oh Lord, the father of twins.

Oh, kisses sweeter than wine,
Oh Lord, kisses sweeter than wine

Our children they numbered just about four,
They all had sweethearts knockin' at the door.
They all got married and they didn't hesitate;
I was, Oh Lord, the grandmother of eight.

Oh, kisses sweeter than wine,
Oh Lord, kisses sweeter than wine

Now that we're old, and ready to go,
We get to thinkin' what happened a long time ago.
We had a lot of kids, trouble and pain,
But, Oh Lord, We'd do it again.

The Good Ole Bible

I believe the Father Adam
Was the first created man
That Eve was made his wife
According to the Master's plan

They lost their home in Eden
The Lord they did offend
I believe the good ole Bible
From beginning to the end

I believe that master Able
Was slain by master Cain
That Noah did go in the Ark
To get out of the rain

I believe that little David
Slew Goliath and his men
I believe the good ole Bible
From beginning to the end

I believe the Hebrew children
Walked in the burning fire
That Ananias was struck dead
Because he was a lair

I believe that father Daniel
Walked in the Lions den
I believe the good ole Bible
From beginning to the end

I believe that the blessed Master
Turned the water into wine
As pure and sweet and harmless
As the grapes upon the vine

All other wines are mockers
The scriptures do contend
I believe the good ole Bible
From beginning to the end

You Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley
You got to walk that lonesome valley
Well, you got to walk it for yourself
Ain't nobody else can walk it for you
You got to walk that valley for yourself

So you start walking on through that lonesome valley
Walking on just by yourself
Yes, nobody else can do it for you
Yeah, you just start to walk it on by yourself

Yeah your not alone in that lonesome valley
although it may seem like your by yourself
Yes, but your not alone in that lonesome valley
Your not alone all by yourself

So keep on a walking on that lonesome valley
even though it's gets rocky up on ahead
but just keep movin on, noone can walk it for you
Keep on pushin on by yourself...

Oh, Jesus walks that lonesome valley
You can see him up ahead
Yes, just keep pushin on he's waitin for us
He had to walk that valley for us by himself

Oh yes, just keep on pushing on that lonesome valley
No matter what just by yourself
Yes, nobody else can walk it for you
Just walk that valley for yourself

Amazing Grace

VERSE 1:
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind but now I see

VERSE 2:
T'was grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

VERSE 3:
Through many dangers, toil and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

VERSE 4:
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
